First Support Group Meeting
Last night my wife and I went to Houston to our first Support Group meeting. We have to attend at least one before surgery to meet insurance requirements. It was on music therapy. The lady leading the session had taught children in music for 25+ years and she talked to us (all adults) like children. Got turned off real quick. I don't know why I have to be so negative with people like that. Even at work I put down things like that when they ask the group to participate. I have issues other than food to deal with. Anyway we left a little early, hope they won't count it against us. If I understand it correctly we are expected to attend these meetings after surgery. They are held the last Wednesday of each month. Not sure how that is going to work out. I think my wife will need more support after surgery than I will. Wait and see.
Now, just wait for the 90 days to end (July 5th), then my last Dietitian and NUT visit (July 7th), and then doctor visit July 14th. Then the insurance waiting game.

Only One "X"
This past Sunday I went shopping with my wife, She was looking for something to wear to our daughter's wedding. Well I decided to look in my section at JC's and tried on some shirts and guess what... I now wear XL Tall shirts, thats right only one "X".
Today is day 81 of the 90 day diet ordered by insurance before surgery. I have lost 46 pounds on this diet. I can't wait till after the surgery to start losing a lot more weight. Maybe next time it will be just a "L" tall.

Happy news
My daughter is getting married. My future son-in-law came to the house this past week and asked for my daughter's hand in marriage. Something new. Not sure what they are thinking but they are going to have a small wedding this year aqnd then a big one next year. What the heck is that all about. Hope their (this year marriage) does not conflict with my plans for surgery. She will have to understand that once I set the date for surgery that is SET. LOL Just kidding, you know parents, they will Totally change their lives for their children.
Catchup time
Been awhile since my last post. Ups and downs since then, as of yesterday I am at 281. Not bad but not dropping like I would like to. But that is my fault. Not eating right and exercise as much as I should. This will have to change in prep for surgery. I am thinking about doing a 15 minute power walking the morning and then a 30 minute walk in the evening.
At work I was told it might be better for me to talk to company nurse about using Family Leave Act instead of Personal Illness and/or vacation. I will look into this next week.
Well the diet is coming to an end. July 5th is my last official day but my last NUT visit is July 7th. And then I go to Dr Davis on July 14th. At that meeting I hope to finalize my paper work and make sure insurance is processing smoothly. So my guess is that my surgery will be within 8 weeks of that. HOPE!

Weekend in New York City
That's right my son and I went to New York City. He is a Yankee fan and wanted to go back to see one more game before they move to the new stadium next year. The Friday morning before we left I reached a new low, 285. So I knew eating on the run and on vacation would be a challenge but I tried. It was so hot in NY, 97 during the game Saturday. I know I drank more than 64 ounces of water but that was not enough. But that was all I drank while I was gone.
Now for three big WOW's. First, unless you are over weight and have flown you will not understand the mental pain of asking for a extender for your seatbelt. But this time it clicked without an extender and had just a little extra strap left.
Second, my son wanted to cross the Brooklyn Bridge to take pictures of the sunset over Manhattan. So we walked across the bridge and, yes, it was long and hot but I made it without stopping. YES! Then we went to the park at the base of the bridge so he could take so more pictures. Side note, while at the park we witnessed a drug bust with about seven officers and one bad guy. Then came time for us to get back to the hotel. We walked back over the bridge and again I did it without stopping. When I got back to our hotel room I had muscles communicating to my brain I never knew I had. But I didn't care, I had just walked over the Brooklyn Bridge and back. Don't think I could have done it 3 months ago.
Can it get any better? Yes. Monday morning I got up and weighed before going to work and I had lost just under 3 pounds. So close to my goal of 275 at surgery. Now I have to get back to work to pay for the trip.

Finally, Smaller clothes - WOW
I am going out of town this weekend with my son so I needed some shorts that will not fall down when I undo my belt. Guess What? I can now fit into jeans two sizes smaller. My weight has stalled but I can now fit into two sizes smaller. If I loose down another size I will not have to pay extra for larger sizes.

Son gets new car
Yesterday when I got off work I took my son, and daughter, to Houston to co-sign on a car for my son. A Scion TC. That was a WOW day for him, I remember when I bought my first car almost at the same age. His is $20K but mine was $3960, (brand new Mazda GLC). It was a Great Little Car. Lasted 13 years and sold it to a friends daughter for $50, she needed a car but did not have much money.
Now for some personal issues / stress. I am going to pick up my grandson, because my daughter went out of state for a two to four week job on a shutdown, making $25 a hour. She left my grandson with a friend of hers, not a good decision, so I am going to call her and pick him up after work. Stress is something I can not handle very good anymore. Family and job issues can sometimes push at a rate I can not handle like I use to. Anyone have any suggestions?

Next to last Dietician visit
Yesterday I went to my next to last dietician visit. I have lost another 11.5 pounds, for a total of 29.5 pounds during the 90 day diet. A WOW moment. I need to get ready for my trip to New York City this weekend. I know I will eat outside the diet, but will try my best.
I was told yesterday that I need to call Dr Davis's office to schedule appointment for after my diet is over, because his appointments are filling up fast. Will do that today. Last Thursday when I was at Dr Davis's office with my wife I told Tamika to change my procedure from Lap Band to Bypass. So after the July 7th dietician visit I will wait to here about my insurance approval.

34 days and counting
I am four days shy of a month to go with my 90 day diet. I go to the dietican tomorrow for my second visit and July 5, 2008 is my 90th day. Can't wait till this part of the journey is over. I still need help, support, and practice on my eating. I have convinced myself that I can eat what I want since I am only on a insurance requiremed diet. This mind set will not work after surgery. What can I do? Other things in my life are causing issues also. Where are we suppose to get help with these issures? I will keep trying, because it is worth it, it is my future.

Up and Down week
on May 25, 2008
Last Sunday I weighed 288, (a WOW moment). Then the rest of the week I got lazy and did not exercise and ate some things I should not have. So this morning I weighed 290. I have to looked at it as a minor set back. But on a good point I passed the half way point of the 90 day supervised diet. I would like to get to 275 before surgery but not sure if that is possible with many more weeks the last week.

Which wieght should I use
on May 18, 2008 5:10 pm
I have this dilemma, I have been weighing on my scales at home after I shower in the mornings nekkid. Which shows my weight at 288.4 this morning. But when I go to the doctor or work and use their scales my numbers are usually are 5 to 6 pounds higher. Of course with all my clothes on, so what weight should I use? I like my scales but the doctors see the higher numbers and that is depressing. I will struggle thru it, I guess.

The secret is out
on May 17, 2008 8:45 am
My wife and I have been trying to keep my journey a secret from the kids, that's a joke. "Someone once told me years ago kids are smarter than you think and know more that you think. You just have to guide them in the right direction." And I keep forgetting that piece of advice. Well my youngest (15 years old) over heard my wife talking about it and see asked questions about it. So my wife had me tell my son (19 years old), and he said he already knew, because of the documentation I have been reading. Now I am sure the oldest two already know but I have to make sure so they won't feel left out.
Neither one of them have a problem with it. Just the normal care free attitude that goes along with teenagers.

Last seven days
on May 17, 2008 8:36 am
Well the last seven days have been interesting. First of all my daughter is doing good but still do not know what caused the numbness. She has done more tests.
Now for a update on my journey. I think I need a name for my journey instead of just saying "my journey". I will work on that. The last seven days have been interesting, I have eaten things I should not have, then got back on the diet. Weight has gone from 291 to 293 to 295 to 293 back to 291 and this morning 292. My carvings are getting stronger and mostly I am staying good. My big down fall is ground beef. I have always been a meat and potato guy. I have been getting hamburgers without the bun, just dry, with a dinner salad. But not sure how I am going to hold up after the surgery with no beef for a long time. Other elements are starting to creep onto my life again, (money issues, grown children issues, etc.) that make me think I may not be able to get to the finish line. Any suggestions???????

First Goal reached .........WOW
on May 8, 2008 3:40 am
With all that has happened this week it almost got lost that I have reached my first goal. That's right I am below 300 for the first time in over six years. I had to wait until I had two readings in a row that were below 300, and this morning was the day. Can't wait until surgery so I can really shot for the 200 pound range.

Almost there
on April 29, 2008 4:09 am
Well Monday I was at 302. Almost there, but with a price. Sunday morning I woke up, rolled over and the room started turning. Set up and it stopped after a couple of minutes. No problem the rest of the day. Sunday night it started again. It was okay as long I stayed still. Emailed my Dietican and she called me during a Monday morning meeting. Basically she chewed me out, see I had sent her my spreadsheet with all my data on what I am eating. I have not been reaching the 1400 calories a day, (staying below 1000). She told me for my height and medical condition I need to between 1200 - 1600. Also since I am exercising 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes on the treadmill. So I tried to eat more, Monday was 1197 calories. Almost 1200. I want to reach the 299 or less mark so bad I am being foolish. My wife has been telling me to eat more, but with tunnel vision it has been hard to listen. But now I am going to following the dietican and hope I get to the 299 mark. Wish me luck............

Bad weekend
on April 23, 2008 3:43 am
Well after the first week of losing a lot of weight I blew it over the past weekend. Bored, sitting around with no one home but me and food. Only a couple of bad foods but too much intake. Started the third week with a loss but from Friday morning to Monday morning gained one pound. I still want to reach my first goal of below 300, but I guess there will be bumps in the road so I need to overcome them. I promised my dietician to exercise at least three times a week. But this week I am shooting for SIX. Wish me luck. So far I am two for two. 5 pounds from my first goal.

Week One down
on April 14, 2008 4:51 am
Well after the first week of the docotor/dietician supervised diet is complete good and bad news. First, I lost a lot of weight first two days then slowed down. The weekend always has eating issues. Wife is struggling with my diet and her cooking style. But she is really trying. The good news is I have lost 17 pounds in the first week. So close to my first milestone I can not wait to hit it. I have been thinking of how to celebrate when I reach it. First thing that came to mind was a ice cream cone from Dairy Queen, but that was the old mind set. Something without food. Also started a multivitamin and calcium citrate today.

Day One of 90 day diet
on April 8, 2008 4:28 am
Yesterday was the first day of my 90 day supervised diet for insurance qualification. Not too bad. I am on a 1400 calorie diet . Yeaterday I consumed 1150 calories and 86 grams of protein. Not bad. But no exercise. Grand-daughter had a softball game, more important. lol Had problems when I got home with hunger, that is my usual time to over eat. Had a cheese stick and was okay until I went to softball fields. Today is exercise day, I made a goal of 3 times a week for 30 minutes. I know it is a slow start but it is a start. Also I will try and stay off the scales for at least every other day. Good luck with that. More updates coming.

Next Step - First Dietician visit
on April 5, 2008 5:00 am
Well I went to my first visit with the dietitian and psychologist yesterday. The journey take another step. And Yes, I made up my mind on the type of surgery. By-pass. So know I can start prep work for that path. So yesterday I was expecting more from the dietitian. It seems to be just a formality. I did get good info to read but not much on verbal exchange. Maybe I am expecting too much.
Today I get to go to the store with my wife and buy the food I need to start my diet. Also need help on setting wieght goal. Not sure how to do that.
I also bought a "DietMinder" book from the dietitian's office ($13) to document my food journey. Better than the spreadsheet I have on my computer, because I don't always have my computer with me.
The psychologist visit was uneventful, but he said I passed. Does that mean I am mentally ok or not? lol

First doctor visit and still confused
on March 28, 2008 2:00 pm
Went to my first visit with Dr. Garth Davis (the son) yesterday. My wife went with me and was mostly quiet. She let me doing all the talking and question asking. Doctor answered all my questions and made me feel great. I met the insurance lady and she is great. I called and schedule my first visit for the dietician, (next Friday 4/4/2008). This will start my 90 day diet. Now for the confusion. I still can not decide Band or By-pass. I am not sure if I have enough self discipline. To me the Band will take more self discipline. I have given myself until Friday (4/4/2008, dietician appointment) to make my decision. Wish me luck.

Dr Davis Seminar
on February 2, 2008 4:32 pm
My wife and I went to Houston this morning to the Seminar that Dr Davis (the father) put on. After the seminar I still do not know what to do. Lap band or by-pass? Also found out my insurance (Aetna) will require "Multidisciplinary surgical preparatory regimen". I read the Aetna explaination but not sure how to get started or if this is costly.
